FUEL ECONOMY

IN TOTAL………………………………………………….

We drove 88,850 km from we unloaded the car in Montreal until we arrived back in Bergamo.

We used 9,150 liters of diesel.

We paid on average just below 1 EUR per liter diesel (0.96 EUR) around the world, ranging from 0.2 EUR/liter in Ecuador to 1.7 EUR/liter in Turkey.

We made an average of 9.7 km per liter in total and so ended up paying on average 0.1 EUR per km. Towards the end up the trip we had learned to drive more economically and so generally stayed at 11 km/liter. Remember, with a Defender you will not go fast but you will go everywhere!

BY COUNTRY……………………………………………..

Europe: We refueled 5 times in 2500 km. Average consumption with fully loaded car was 7 km/liter. Average speed on highways 110-125 km/hr. It is expensive to drive fast in a Defender!

Canada: From Calgary going west, we have managed to drive long distances at circa 10 km/liter! On the Trans-Canada Highway from Montreal to Calgary we made on average 8.8 km/liter at some 90-100 km/hour in 6th gear at 2000 rpm and good weather conditions. At increased speed/increased rpm or strong winds we are down to some 7.5 km/liter. Fuel cost is varying from 1.30 to 1.11 CAD/liter, generally decreasing towards from east to west, cheapest in Alberta and increasing again in B.C.

USA: Making 10 km/liter along the Highway 101. Diesel cost is about 1 USD/liter.

Mexico: Keeping on average 10 km/liter, down to some 9 km/liter if we are using the air conditioning. Diesel cost is fixed (Pemex): Baja Peninsular 10.5 MXN/liter, 0.64 EUR/liter. Mexico mainland 10.8 MXN/liter, 0.7 EUR/liter.

Belize: Diesel cost approximately 1 EUR/liter.

Guatemala: Diesel cost approximately 0.9 EUR/liter. We are fueling only in Texaco or Esso gas stations.

El Salvador: Diesel cost approximately 0.9 EUR/liter. We fueled only once in a Texaco gas station.

Nicaragua: Diesel cost average some 0.8 EUR/liter. We fueled twice in Esso gas stations.

Costa Rica: Diesel cost approximately 0.9 EUR/liter. We fueled only at Ursa/Texaco and Total gas stations.

Panama: Diesel cost on average 0.85 EUR/liter. We fueled only at Texaco gas stations.

Colombia: Diesel cost varied a lot, on average 0.9 EUR/liter. We fueled at Esso, Texaco and Petromil. Just before the border to Ecuador, the fuel cost drops a lot.

Ecuador: Diesel cost approximately 0.2 EUR/liter! We fueled at Petroecuador, PS and PRIMAX.

Peru: Diesel cost approximately 1.1 EUR/liter. We fueled mainly at REPSOL and PECSA.

Chile: Diesel cost approximately 1.1 EUR/liter. We fueled at Shell, Petrobras and COPEC.

Argentina: Diesel cost on average 1 EUR/liter at the official exchange rate. The diesel is more expensive in the north and in Buenos Aires and cheapest in the south.

Japan: We fueled diesel at between 119 and 138 JPY per liter. On average we are staying just below 1 EUR per liter (126 JPY/liter or 0.97 EUR/liter at 130 JPY per EUR).

Russia: In the eastern part of Russia, from Sakhalin to Irkutsk, we have fueled diesel at between 35.5 and 31.6 Rubles/liter, it is getting cheaper from East to West. In the western part of Russia, from Irkutsk and over Volgograd down to Caucasus, we have fueled diesel at 27 to 30.5 Rubles/liter. The most common price is just below 30 Rubles/liter if you use Rosneft, Lukoil, Gazprom, AZS.  On average we have spent 0.71 EUR/liter so far in all of Russia.
